British Air Force Typhoon jets have joined forces with French aircraft in a combined operation against an hidden munitions depot in Syria used by the Islamic State group (IS), according to the UK's MoD.

The site, located using intelligence, was assessed as containing munitions and bombs, the statement said, and was located in mountainous terrain just above Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"The RAF jets employed Paveway IV guided bombs to strike a series of access tunnels leading to the site... initial indications indicate the objective was successfully hit," the ministry announced.

There was no sign of any civilian casualties in the attack conducted Saturday night and all the aircraft made a safe return, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon FGR4s were supported by a Voyager tanker plane.

The Islamic State group - referred to as ISIS - imposed extremist governance over significant areas in Iraq and Syria until 2019.

"This strike underscores British leadership, and commitment to work closely with allied nations, to eradicate any revival of the terrorist group and their violent and radical beliefs in the area," UK Defence Secretary John Healey stated.

RAF aircraft have carried out surveillance missions over Syrian airspace to "forestall any efforts to regroup" of Islamic State after its military defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the authorities noted.

"I must thank all the members of the UK armed forces participating in this mission for their expertise and their valour," Healey commented. "Including them were numerous UK service members on duty over Christmas and New Year. This operation, to remove terrorist threats who threaten our safety, demonstrates how British military are always on standby, continuously, keeping Britain secure at home and strong abroad."

Last December, the American forces carried out what it described as a "massive strike" targeting IS targets in Syria, subsequent to an attack resulted in the deaths of two American soldiers and a civilian interpreter in Palmyra.

The United Nations reports Daesh still boasts between 5,000 and 7,000 fighters in both countries.
